Project Overview

Detectamet manufactures and sells metal-detectable items primarily to food manufacturing facilities. Being a B2B company meant that the majority of orders came via phone calls and emails to the in-house sales team so issuing a printed catalogue to compliment its website was very much a viable way to showcase its product range.

This 92-page, A5 catalogue I designed was a new approach for Detectamet which had previously published a more comprehensive A4-size catalogue. It was determined by Marketing that a smaller catalogue that focussed on the most popular products would save print costs without affecting sales.

My task was to design a new catalogue from the ground up using existing product imagery. Detectamet was currently using a single typeface for its marketing materials. To aid in readability and provide variety in the design I implemented a complimentary typeface for the body copy whilst retaining the original typeface for headings.

Each product listing needed to provide a clear photo of the product along with a short description, size and colour information for the product and any variants along with the product’s food-safe properties and its ‘detectability’ (metal or x-ray detectable). I suggested that products that could be customised with numbering or branding should also be indicated as such to highlight this service that the company offered. I was also keen to advertise and explain the benefits of the available customisation options for those customers who hadn’t considered them.
